Patent lings around the world exceeded 3.3 million, representing a 5.2% growth on 2017 gures. Trademark ling activity totaled 14.3 million, up 15.5% on 2017. Industrial design ling activity amounted to 1.3 million. Applications for utility models grew by 21.8% to reach 2.1 million applications, while plant varieties lings reached 20,210 in 2018. China has been the main driver of global growth in IP lings in recent years and it was once again the main source of growth in worldwide IP lings in 2018. Filing activity in China grew by 11.6% for patents, 28.3% for trademarks and 12.7% for industrial designs. The IP ofce of China now accounts for 46.4% of patent lings and more than half of global trademark (51.4%) and industrial design (54%) ling activity. The United States of America (U.S.) saw a 1.6% fall in patent lings in 2018 the rst decline since 2009. However, trademark ling activity in the U.S. grew by 4.3% a ninth successive year of growth. Patent lings and trademark ling activity in Japan declined by 1.5% and 8.6%, respectively. The Republic of Korea saw growth in both patent lings (+2.5%) and trademark ling activity (+14.5%). Another notable trend for the year were the large increases in trademark ling activity in India (+20.9%), France (+10.5%) and Brazil (+9.8%). India saw strong growth in patent lings (+7.5%), while in respect of industrial design ling activity, the United Kingdom (U.K.) (+42.4%), the Russian Federation (+21%), Italy (+16.6%) and India (+13.6%) all saw double-digit growth in 2018. For a second year, this report includes statistics on the creative economy, reecting the publishing industry. Considerable efforts have been made to improve the quality and geographical coverage of these statistics; as a result, this years edition of World Intellectual Property Indicators includes 2018 publishing activity data for 49 countries. In addition, for the rst time, data on legal deposits at national libraries covering 39 countries are included in this edition. It should be noted that, although these statistics are in many ways still partial and incomplete, they represent progress in building a more complete and comparable picture of global publishing activity worldwide. Readers wishing to go beyond the statistics presented in this report can use the statistical tools on WIPOs website (wipo.int/ipstats), notably the IP Statistics Data Center and the Statistical Country Proles. As always, I would like to thank our member states, as well as national and regional IP authorities, for shar- ing their annual statistics with WIPO. Their invaluable cooperation makes the World Intellectual Property Indicators possible.Francis GURRYDirector General6 Acknowledgements World Intellectual Property Indicators 2019 was prepared under the direction of Francis Gurry (Director General) and supervised by Carsten Fink (Chief Economist). This represents a 5.2% increase on the previous year (gure 1.1). Driving such strong growth was an exceptional number of lings in China, which received about 160,400 more lings in 2018 than it had in 2017. The next largest contributors were the European Patent Ofce (EPO) (7,812 additional lings) and the ofces of the Republic of Korea (5,217) and India (3,473). The long-term trend shows patent applications grow- ing worldwide every year since 2004, with the sole exception of 2009 when they decreased by 3.8% due to the nancial crisis. Of the 3.3 million applications led worldwide in 2018, resident applicants led 2.4 million (71.5% of the total), while non-resident applicant led the remaining 0.9 million (28.5%). Resident share increased from 61.6% in 2004 to 71.5% in 2018. In addition, the proportion of resident versus non-resident lings varies greatly across ofces. For example, more than half of all applications led in the United States of America (U.S.) were non- resident applications, whereas non-resident share was less than a one-tenth of all applications led in China. China received 1.5 million patent applications The National Intellectual Property Administration of the Peoples Republic of China received 1.5 million patent applications in 2018, an amount similar in magnitude to the combined total of the ofces ranked from 2 to 11.
